Nash Community College President Bill Carver voiced his excitement over the potential installation of newenergy-saving lights at the college at a presentation Wednesday.

“We’re all interested in electrical consumption and what that does to the bottom line,” he said.

Carver, along with representatives from Progress Energy, Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools and Wilson Community College, sat for an hour-and-a-half demonstration in which GreenTech Solutions and Advanced Vehicle Research Center employees pitched the possibility of replacing existing T12 and T8 fluorescent light fixtures with “the most energy efficient” T5 technology.

“The savings on the efficiency side are so big,” said Glenn Edmonds of AVRC. “It’s not going to take much before we can start shutting down power plants and reducing our carbon footprint.”

The installation of the energy efficient lighting in Building D, Room 4101 at the college served as a demonstration with real numbers to illustrate the potential savings that can be made with the new lights.

Mark Brown of AVRC said the new T5 lighting conversion systems that were on display already have been implemented in Europe more than five years ago.

“These lamps offer tremendous savings like a 45-79 percent reduction in energy costs,” he said.

He said after T5 installation, the typical payback period is one to two years, and the lamps are a “must” should one pursue an Energy Star rating.

Plummer Nye of GreenTech Solutions Group then presented the benefits of magnetic induction lighting, an alternative for higher efficiency lighting in high bay areas such as gyms, warehouses, parking lots and manufacturing plants.

Nye described how the magnetic induction lamps provide the closest thing to actual sunlight, and immediately turn on and off as opposed to flickering for a minute.
